My First Real Blogging & Photography Conference: Setting a High Bar

Believe it or not, this spectacular voyage marked my very first real blog and photography conference. And honestly, I think I’ve been irreversibly spoiled for life in terms of location and overall experience. Future conferences will have an incredibly high bar to meet after this! I’m pretty sure I’m in for a rude awakening when the next one doesn’t involve turquoise seas and endless sunshine. The decision to attend was made on a whim, about six months prior, when I stumbled upon an offer that was too good to pass up. It was an amazing deal, and the primary focus on photography was absolutely ideal for my aspirations and ongoing learning journey. As someone constantly striving to improve my visual storytelling, this aspect alone made the retreat irresistible.

Beyond the professional draw, the timing was perfect. With a wedding and a cascade of other major life events rapidly approaching in the next few months, I desperately needed a mini-vacation. This retreat offered the perfect blend of relaxation and productivity, a chance to recharge my batteries before the exciting whirlwind ahead. It wasn’t just about escaping, though; it was about investing in myself, both personally and professionally, in a way that felt truly restorative.

Achieving My 2015 Travel Goal: A Journey of Connection

One of my major personal goals for 2015 was to travel more. Due to demanding previous jobs, opportunities for extensive travel had been limited over the past few years. Mission accomplished! This retreat wasn’t just a tick on a checklist; it was a deeply enriching experience that satisfied a profound desire for exploration and new experiences. The intimate size of the retreat, with approximately 50 attendees, fostered a wonderfully supportive and engaging environment. It was primarily geared towards bloggers and photography enthusiasts, creating a unique synergy among like-minded individuals. What struck me most, however, was the delightful irony that at least twenty of us were food bloggers! There was an immediate camaraderie, a shared language of recipes, plating, and perfect lighting. A huge shout-out to my fantastic new buddy and roommate, Meagan, with whom I shared countless laugh-crying moments throughout the entire trip. Her infectious energy and shared passion made the experience even more memorable.

It’s truly a testament to the incredible warmth and genuine connection within the blogging community that I felt completely comfortable embarking on a cruise with 50 people, none of whom I had ever met in real life before. When you pause to think about it, the idea of getting on a boat with a group of strangers sounds a little crazy. And yet, there we were, metaphorically “stranded” (in the best possible way) in the middle of the ocean, having an absolute blast together on what turned out to be the second largest cruise ship in the world.
