Our First Apartment: Embracing New Beginnings in Walkable Arlington, VA
The past few months have been a whirlwind of significant changes and new beginnings, not just for me, but for my entire family. It all started several months ago when my dad received an incredible job offer overseas in Glasgow, Scotland. After careful consideration, he accepted, embarking on this new adventure in April. Since then, it’s been just my mom and I at home, as she diligently completed her final year as a teacher. Today marks yet another pivotal moment: she’s finally heading off to join my dad in Scotland. While this period has brought immense adjustments and bittersweet goodbyes, it also paved the way for my own exciting new chapter.
In anticipation of my parents’ move, I’ve also been meticulously planning my own significant transition – even if it’s just a few miles away. That’s right! I am officially moving out of my childhood home and into my very first apartment with Connor, and of course, our furry companion, Max the cat. Our decision to remain in the vibrant DC area was primarily influenced by Connor’s acceptance into Georgetown Medical School, which he will begin this fall. With this exciting future ahead, we’ve been eagerly searching for a place that embodies a fun, young, and, most importantly, walkable lifestyle. Our sights were set on Northern Arlington, a highly sought-after neighborhood just outside the bustling heart of Washington D.C.
Finding Our Footing in Northern Arlington
Northern Arlington held a particular appeal for us. Its reputation for being a dynamic, youthful community resonated deeply with our aspirations for post-college life. We envisioned a neighborhood where convenience was paramount – a place where we could walk to vibrant restaurants offering diverse cuisines, eclectic shops for unique finds, scenic running trails to stay active, and the Metro station for easy access to the entire DC metropolitan area, including Connor’s campus. The idea of leaving the car behind for daily errands and entertainment was a major draw, promising a more sustainable and engaging urban experience. This lifestyle was a stark contrast to my comfortable but somewhat isolated suburban life at home, and I was more than ready for a fresh start, a new routine, and the invigorating energy of city living.
Living at home since graduating last May offered invaluable benefits, for which I am immensely grateful. It allowed me to significantly save money, initially with the goal of attending nursing school, and provided a crucial period to adjust to the rhythms of post-college life without the immediate pressures of full financial independence. More importantly, it afforded me precious quality time with my parents before they embarked on their international move. However, as much as I appreciated this transitional phase, a deep longing for a change in scenery and routine had grown. The prospect of cultivating my own independent space, establishing new routines, and fully embracing the responsibilities and freedoms of adulthood was incredibly enticing.
The Grueling Apartment Hunt: A Rollercoaster of Emotions
Our criteria for a new apartment were clear: it needed to be within walking distance of essential amenities like restaurants, various shops, invigorating running trails, the Metro station, and even a local gym. Finding a place that offered all these conveniences was a major priority, and luckily, we did find one that met these key requirements. However, the journey to finding this perfect spot was anything but straightforward or ideal. In fact, it was a test of patience, perseverance, and emotional resilience.
Initially, our plan was to move in during July or August, allowing us ample time to settle in before Connor’s demanding medical school curriculum began. Yet, the excitement and anticipation of this new chapter made it impossible for me to wait. I couldn’t help but start my apartment search much sooner than anticipated, eagerly “stalking” Craigslist listings in late May. It quickly became an obsessive daily ritual, endlessly scrolling through ads, filtering by location, price, and features, convinced that our ideal home was just a click away.
The First Disappointment: A Needle in a Haystack
Within just 24 hours of my obsessive clicking, I stumbled upon a listing that sounded absolutely perfect – almost too good to be true. It described a charming second-floor apartment in an old Victorian house, boasting more than enough square footage for us, and even a coveted covered balcony – an added bonus we hadn’t even dared to dream of. We were ecstatic and immediately arranged a viewing for the following week. Our excitement was palpable, imagining ourselves living in such a character-filled space. But just about 30 minutes before we were set to head out the door for the viewing, our hopes were dashed. We received a curt message: the landlord had already leased the apartment to someone else without bothering to notify us. We were, to put it mildly, beyond unhappy. The frustration was immense, a bitter taste of the competitive D.C. rental market.
The next few hours were spent walking around, dejectedly looking at other apartment buildings, a stark contrast to our earlier buoyant mood. It was during this impromptu, disheartening walk that the harsh reality truly set in: our “already-given-away-ideal-apartment” was essentially a needle in a haystack. Every subsequent viewing only reinforced this feeling. We saw nearly ten different apartments in the days that followed, each one falling short in some significant way – too small, too expensive for what it offered, lacking desired amenities, or simply feeling uninspired. We began to feel a creeping sense of desperation. After numerous compromises and deflated expectations, we finally found an option that, while providing a similar amount of space, came with a significantly higher monthly rent. Reluctantly, and with heavy hearts, we decided to go through the rental application process for this pricier alternative, feeling it was our only viable option at that point.
A Serendipitous Find: Hope on Craigslist
However, fate, or perhaps just sheer luck and a last-ditch effort, had other plans. That very night, at the last possible moment before committing to the expensive apartment, we decided to give Craigslist one more try. What we saw next made our jaws drop:
- 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath Apartment Available July 1 in ALL UTILITIES are included in your rent!
- Additional Features:
- Both bedrooms are large (Master is 20′ x 14′, Second BR is 14′ x 12′), Master has walk-in closet and en suite bath.
- 2 Full Baths are ideal for roommates or a couple desiring extra space and privacy.
- Large, private balcony shaded by trees for privacy and outdoor relaxation.
- Monthly parking for 2 cars available (One dedicated parking space with unit, plenty of additional parking for second car and guests).
- AMAZING location within easy walking distance of Clarendon/Courthouse Metro stations and vibrant amenities in Arlington.
The list of features was astounding, almost unbelievable. Two bedrooms and two full bathrooms meant not only ample space for Connor and me but also a dedicated guest bathroom or a perfect setup for when one of us needed extra privacy during busy study or work sessions. The master bedroom, a generous 20’ x 14’, promised a true sanctuary, complete with a walk-in closet and a private en suite bath – luxuries we hadn’t expected to find in our price range. The second bedroom, at 14’ x 12’, was equally spacious and versatile. Then there was the large, private, tree-shaded balcony – a dream come true for enjoying morning coffee or evening relaxation outdoors, a rare commodity in urban rentals. And to top it all off, monthly parking for two cars, with one dedicated space, was a significant bonus in an area where parking can be a nightmare. But perhaps the most compelling factor was the location: “AMAZING location within walking distance of Clarendon/Courthouse in Arlington” – exactly the vibrant, walkable neighborhood we had been so desperately seeking.
The Unbelievable Deal: A Dream Come True
And then there was the price. Could I also add that this apartment was listed for an astonishing $600 less a month than the apartment we were within 24 hours of officially signing a lease for? And not only was it significantly cheaper, but it also included ALL utilities! This wasn’t just a good deal; it was an absolute steal, a beacon of hope in what had been an emotionally draining and financially daunting search. The thought of saving $600 a month, plus the unpredictable costs of utilities, was mind-boggling. It meant an additional nearly $7,200 annually, a substantial sum that could greatly alleviate the financial burden of medical school and setting up our new home. The offer felt truly unreal, prompting an immediate surge of adrenaline and a desperate hope that it wasn’t too good to be true.
Within a mere 30 seconds of spotting the ad, we drafted and sent an email to the current tenant, our fingers crossed, offering a silent prayer that this opportunity wouldn’t slip through our grasp like the first “perfect” Victorian apartment. During what turned out to be a short but intensely emotionally exhausting search process, we had encountered numerous one-bedroom apartments going for about $800 more a month, offering half as many features and significantly less space. The memory of those disappointing viewings, coupled with the previous heartbreak, made us acutely aware of the rarity of such a find. I couldn’t help but harbor a lingering suspicion that this incredible deal was too good to be true, a fleeting illusion. Yet, despite the apprehension, we knew we had to pursue it with every ounce of our energy. We promptly emailed the tenants, practically begging to see the apartment as soon as humanly possible.
Seizing the Opportunity: A Leap of Faith
The next two hours were a blur of anxious anticipation, my finger hovering over the refresh button in my email inbox, willing a response to appear. Finally, a reply! We successfully set up an appointment. Having learned a harsh lesson with the first apartment that was snatched away without warning, we made a bold decision: we would sign a rental application right away, sight unseen, without even having set foot inside the apartment. It felt risky, a true leap of faith, but the fear of losing another exceptional opportunity propelled us forward. We reasoned that the detailed description, the compelling photos, and the unbeatable combination of features and price, coupled with the prime location, were enough to justify this unconventional approach. We trusted our instincts and the information provided, determined not to let hesitation cost us our dream home.
Our proactive approach paid off. A mere 36 hours later, we proudly signed the lease, sealing the deal on what felt like a miraculous discovery. The relief and excitement were immense, a culmination of weeks of stress, dashed hopes, and finally, incredible fortune. This weekend, the planning and anticipation transform into action: we are officially moving in! The journey has been an emotional rollercoaster, but standing on the brink of this new chapter, with our perfect first apartment secured in the heart of Northern Arlington, feels incredibly liberating and empowering. We’re eager to transform this space into our home, to explore our new neighborhood, and to embark on all the adventures that come with independent living.
