A Culinary Dream Come True: My Evening with Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen in Washington D.C.
This past Monday unfolded as an exceptionally eventful day, marking a significant milestone in my culinary journey. It was the day of my third—and final—culinary school class, a topic I look forward to exploring in a dedicated post very soon. These immersive classes typically coincide with a precious day off from my demanding schedule at the restaurant, which means the entire evening is usually free for personal pursuits. Most often, my partner Connor and I opt for a relaxed night in, perhaps conjuring up a delightful homemade dinner, depending on how much energy I can still muster after a day of intensive learning.
However, this particular Monday was anything but typical. It presented an extraordinary opportunity that had been eagerly anticipated for weeks: a book signing event with the one and only Deb Perelman. For those unfamiliar, Deb is the brilliant mind behind Smitten Kitchen, one of my absolute favorite food blogs, and the acclaimed author of The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook—a recent and cherished addition to my culinary library. The event was held at Politics and Prose, an iconic independent bookstore nestled in the heart of Washington D.C., known for its vibrant literary scene and intimate author interactions. The chance to meet Deb in person, a culinary hero whose recipes and witty anecdotes have filled my kitchen with joy and laughter, was an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up.
Given Deb Perelman’s immense popularity and the passionate following of Smitten Kitchen, I certainly expected a notable turnout. She is, after all, a genuine force in the food blogging and cookbook world. However, I don’t think I, or perhaps even Deb herself, was fully prepared for the sheer magnitude of the crowd that evening. Politics and Prose, a bookstore renowned for its expansive layout and multiple levels, was absolutely bursting at the seams. Every aisle, every corner, and every available standing space was completely packed with eager fans. The energy was palpable, a mix of excitement and shared adoration for Deb’s work. The bookstore staff revealed that they had pre-ordered over 800 copies of The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, a testament to its anticipated demand, and these copies sold out almost immediately upon the store’s opening for the event. This incredible response highlighted the profound connection readers feel to Deb’s relatable approach to home cooking and her engaging storytelling.
By a stroke of serendipitous luck, I had already acquired my copy of the cookbook as a wonderful surprise Halloween gift from my parents. This meant I could bypass the initial rush to purchase the book at the event, though I must confess to feeling a pang of guilt as I politely informed the bookstore salespeople that I already owned a copy and didn’t need to purchase one from their shelves. Despite the bustling environment and the rising temperatures within the crowded space, I was incredibly grateful to be there, soaking in the atmosphere alongside hundreds of other devoted Smitten Kitchen enthusiasts. The collective anticipation for Deb’s appearance was a memory I’ll cherish.
The atmosphere inside Politics and Prose was a bit warm and humid, a natural consequence of so many enthusiastic people packed into one space. However, this minor discomfort quickly faded as Connor, my mom, and I managed to secure a fantastic spot with a clear line of sight to the podium. The wait was filled with eager chatter and a shared sense of community among fellow food lovers. Approximately 30 minutes later, the moment arrived: Deb Perelman gracefully walked into the bookstore, greeted by a wave of applause and cheers. She began her talk with a warm introduction to her new cookbook, sharing insights into its creation and the inspiration behind many of its recipes. She also touched upon the genesis of her beloved website, Smitten Kitchen, detailing her journey from a passionate home cook to a celebrated food blogger and author. The remainder of her time was dedicated to a lively and engaging Q&A session, with questions directed by the enthusiastic audience, revealing even more about her unique perspective.
Deb, with her characteristic wit and candidness, fielded every question thrown her way. I’ll paraphrase some of the highlights here, as her answers offered wonderful glimpses into her world. When asked about her favorite recipe in The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, she thoughtfully responded with two standout dishes: the incredibly flavorful roasted chicken with grapes and olives, and the delightfully addictive apple cider caramels. These choices perfectly encapsulate her style—comforting yet sophisticated, and always achievable for the home cook. Regarding her day-to-day schedule, she humorously described her life as a charming mixture of “toddler-ing and cooking,” a reality that resonated deeply with many in the audience who juggle family life with their culinary passions. And when it came to finding inspiration for her posts and inventive recipe creations, her answer was refreshingly simple and universally relatable: “hunger, mostly.” This honest admission underscored her practical, down-to-earth approach to food, proving that the best culinary ideas often stem from the most basic human need.
Listening to Deb speak, it became abundantly clear that her authentic personality shines through both in person and in her writing. She possesses a rare blend of sharp wit, understated sarcasm, and a genuinely down-to-earth demeanor. Her passion for food is unmistakable, bordering on infectious, and her dedication to perfecting and simplifying recipes specifically for the home cook is truly admirable. She makes complex flavors approachable and turns everyday ingredients into extraordinary meals, a philosophy that has endeared her to millions. It’s this authenticity and unwavering commitment to delicious, achievable food that makes Smitten Kitchen such a treasured resource for cooks of all levels.
As a burgeoning food blogger myself, I can only hope to achieve even a fraction of what Deb Perelman has accomplished with Smitten Kitchen. Her ability to connect with an audience, inspire confidence in the kitchen, and consistently deliver innovative and delicious recipes is truly aspirational. Following the insightful talk and engaging Q&A, the bookstore announced the opportunity for attendees to get their books signed. Let me tell you, I have never witnessed a crowd move with such incredible speed and determination. Despite the bookstore staff’s valiant efforts to organize everyone into a coherent and respectful line—a seemingly reasonable expectation that, to their later dismay, was quickly abandoned—it instantly devolved into a rather spirited dash to get to the front. The sheer enthusiasm was overwhelming, creating a scene of good-natured chaos.
After bravely attempting to stand in what loosely resembled a line for about 20 minutes and observing very little forward movement, Connor and I made a strategic decision. We figured that since the line was clearly going to take hours, we might as well grab dinner and return later, hoping the crowd would have thinned out. The thought of standing for another hour or two on an empty stomach was simply not appealing. This proved to be a stroke of genius, as it allowed us to enjoy another one of D.C.’s culinary gems.
Politics and Prose is conveniently located just a short, pleasant walk from Comet Ping Pong, a vibrant eatery that, in my humble opinion, serves some of the absolute best pizza in all of Washington D.C. Unfortunately, I am far from the only person who holds this view. As a result, the lines and wait times at Comet Ping Pong can often stretch to two hours or even more, particularly on bustling weekend evenings. Luckily, since our Smitten Kitchen adventure took place on a Monday weekday, we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves waiting only about 20 minutes for a table. This provided the perfect opportunity to refuel and reflect on the inspiring event we had just attended, all while anticipating some truly exceptional pizza.
Our dinner at Comet Ping Pong was nothing short of spectacular. We ended up ordering and sharing two of their signature pizzas: the exquisite Steel Wills, a vegetarian masterpiece topped with fresh spinach, creamy ricotta, aromatic garlic, savory parmesan, briny Kalamata olives, and a rich tomato sauce; and the hearty Stanley, featuring house-made Italian fennel sausage, robust tomato sauce, melted mozzarella, and tender roasted peppers. To complement our pizzas, we also indulged in a refreshing arugula salad, lightly dressed and generously topped with delicate shaved parmesan. While their crust is undeniably superb—perfectly blistered and chewy—it’s their tomato sauce that truly elevates their pizzas to another level. I’m fairly confident they slow-cook it for hours, allowing the flavors to deepen and meld, often enriching it with a generous amount of parmesan cheese to achieve that extra layer of umami and complexity. Each bite was a symphony of flavors and textures, reinforcing my belief that I could happily eat great pizza every single day of my life. The combination of the crispy crust, the vibrant toppings, and that standout sauce makes Comet Ping Pong an absolute must-visit for any pizza aficionado in D.C.
After savoring every last bite of our delicious pizza, Connor and I headed back to Politics and Prose, operating under the (what we thought was brilliant) assumption that by this time, we surely must have missed the majority of the book signing line. Alas, we were profoundly mistaken! Upon our return, we were greeted by a line that still snaked through the bookstore, looking as though there was at least another hour’s wait ahead of us. We contemplated joining the queue once more, weighing the desire for a personalized signature against the late hour and the exhaustion of a long day. In the end, we decided to call it a (week)night and head home, prioritizing a good night’s rest.
However, the story doesn’t end without a happy resolution. Even though we didn’t get to meet Deb Perelman face-to-face for a quick chat, I did have the chance to leave my copy of The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook with the bookstore staff. They assured us it would be signed by Deb and available for pickup later. So, despite the long lines and the late hour, it was pretty much a win-win situation. I experienced the vibrant energy of the book signing, heard Deb speak, enjoyed an incredible meal, and my beloved cookbook would still receive its coveted autograph.
Overall, it was a truly memorable and delightful night out, filled with culinary inspiration and fantastic food. I’ve already tried one recipe from The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook—a testament to its immediate appeal—and I’m eagerly looking forward to diving into many more in the upcoming weeks. I can’t wait to share my cooking adventures and the delicious results with you all very soon!
