Deeper Degrees of Change

Blog Makeover & Kitchen Wisdom: A Fresh Start with Essential Home Remedies

It’s with immense excitement that I finally get to unveil a significant transformation here at the blog! For those of you who follow via RSS reader, I genuinely encourage you to pop over to the website to experience it firsthand. This blog refresh, particularly the new header, has been a long time coming. Since the very inception of this platform, I’ve envisioned a more refined and purposeful aesthetic, though I was content with the previous design while I meticulously planned what I truly wanted to achieve. To be perfectly honest, diving into the intricate world of CSS code isn’t my favorite pastime, so the task of a complete overhaul was somewhat daunting and, admittedly, I’d been postponing it. However, a few weeks ago, I made the firm decision that it was time for an upgrade – something better, something that truly aligned with my evolving vision and the future direction of this blog. I was incredibly fortunate to collaborate with the wonderfully talented Caitlin over at Lark Creatif, whose expertise and creative insight brought my ideas to life. I am absolutely thrilled with the results, and I genuinely hope you are too! Your thoughts and feedback are incredibly valuable to me, so please don’t hesitate to share what you think in the comments section below.

Beyond just the header, you’ve likely noticed that the entire layout and color scheme of the blog have undergone a complete transformation. This wasn’t merely a stylistic choice but a necessary evolution. Initially, my plan was simply to update the header, but as I delved deeper, it became clear that the original layout wasn’t conducive to the new design elements I wanted to incorporate. This necessitated a broader move to a completely new template, allowing for greater flexibility and a more cohesive aesthetic. While I’m still fine-tuning some minor elements – you might notice a few navigation items or widgets have shifted slightly – the core functionality and accessibility remain steadfast. I must admit, I do miss the vibrant splash of colors from the previous design, but I’m truly embracing this new direction. The current aesthetic is distinctly more simplistic, clean-lined, and less cluttered, which aligns perfectly with my personal preferences and my goal of offering a more streamlined and enjoyable user experience for all of you. This refreshed look is designed to enhance readability, improve navigation, and ultimately provide a more pleasant environment for you to explore my content.

Beyond Design: Unexpected Lessons from the Kitchen

And now, onto an entirely different kind of ‘change’!

What do all four of these seemingly disparate items have in common?

Surprisingly, they are all widely suggested remedies for {oven} burns!

This rather unexpected turn in topic stems directly from a dramatic incident that occurred at the bakery this morning. From the looks of the rather unfortunate situation I found myself in, I was desperately in need of any effective remedy I could get my hands on. Yes, those would be two rather prominent, fiery red circles now adorning my arm. The culprit? Reaching way back into an industrial-sized oven, a common hazard in a busy professional kitchen, to retrieve a rogue piece of foil that had detached from a baked good. In that moment of reaching, my bare arm unfortunately made contact with a searing hot surface. It was a swift, sharp pain, followed by the immediate realization that I was in trouble. I think it’s safe to say that extra-long, heat-resistant oven mitts have just skyrocketed to the very top of my Christmas wish list this year. This incident served as a stark reminder that even in a familiar environment, vigilance and proper safety precautions are paramount, especially when dealing with intense heat and industrial equipment.

Following my mishap, a quick but thorough Google search revealed a surprisingly extensive list of natural – and at times, quite unconventional – burn remedies. What truly astonished me was discovering that a hefty majority of these suggestions involve common food items or household staples that most people already have tucked away in their pantries or refrigerators. So, if you ever find yourself in a similar predicament and realize you’ve run out of trusted first-aid staples like Neosporin or aloe vera (which, incidentally, are now going to be permanent residents in my purse!), there’s no need to panic. I’ve compiled a fascinating list of natural alternatives that might just surprise you. While some of these might be familiar, I’m confident that many will introduce you to entirely new possibilities for managing minor burns at home.

Common & Lesser-Known Natural Burn Remedies

**Important Disclaimer:** While these remedies are often cited for minor burns, always consult a healthcare professional for severe burns (larger than your palm, deep, blistering, or on sensitive areas) or if symptoms worsen. This information is for general knowledge and not a substitute for professional medical advice.

  • Olive oil or Vitamin E oil (from a squeezed capsule): Known for their moisturizing and skin-healing properties, these can help soothe and nourish the affected area.
  • Witch Hazel or Aloe Vera: These are well-regarded for their anti-inflammatory and cooling effects, providing immediate relief and promoting skin recovery.

And the less familiar, yet surprisingly common, recommendations:

  • Honey: Beyond its delicious taste, honey is celebrated for its natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities, making it a popular traditional remedy for wound healing.
  • Mustard: Some anecdotal accounts suggest that yellow mustard can draw heat out of a burn, though scientific evidence is limited.
  • Broccoli, Potatoes, or Citrus Fruits (to eat, not apply!): These foods are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, crucial for internal healing and strengthening the body’s recovery process. Don’t be caught trying to rub these on your burns – you’ll just make a mess and potentially irritate the skin! Their benefit is internal, aiding in recovery.
  • Egg whites: Believed by some to create a protective barrier and provide a cooling sensation, though again, scientific backing is sparse.
  • Milk: The fat and protein in milk are thought to help soothe the skin and reduce pain, offering a cooling effect.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Diluted ACV is sometimes used as an antiseptic and to prevent infection, but it should be used with caution on broken skin as it can sting.
  • Toothpaste: While a commonly cited folk remedy, toothpaste can actually irritate the skin, cause infection, and worsen the burn, so it’s generally advised to avoid this.

In the true spirit of scientific curiosity (and being a rather willing, albeit needy, patient), I decided to put a few of these remedies to the test on my own second-degree oven burn. I opted for mustard, honey, Neosporin, and Benadryl cream (for itch relief, though sometimes applied to burns for its cooling effect, which isn’t its primary purpose for burns). What were my findings?

The order of application (from left to right on my arm): Mustard, Neosporin, & Honey.

My personal experiment yielded some interesting, if not entirely surprising, results. The mustard, for instance, started to burn almost immediately upon application, which certainly wasn’t the relief I was hoping for. So, I wasn’t particularly impressed with that one. In stark contrast, both the honey and the Neosporin provided immediate, soothing relief without any burning sensation. They effectively took some of the intense pain away almost instantly, proving their efficacy in my case. Mission accomplished! This experience only solidifies my belief that honey is not just a delightful sweetener but also an incredibly versatile and beneficial item to always have well-stocked in the cabinet, or even better, within arm’s reach for such unexpected emergencies.

Life in the Bakery and New Routines

After the adrenaline and sheer exhaustion of baking for six continuous hours today, returning home to literally tend to my wounds, I settled into what has become my new, highly anticipated routine: devouring a huge bowl of plain, steamed vegetables as quickly as possible. Seriously, working in a professional bakery, surrounded by an endless array of tempting pastries, rich breads, and decadent desserts, has cultivated an almost insatiable craving for simple, wholesome vegetables like never before. It’s an ironic twist! This newfound, powerful desire for greens could, however, present a unique challenge, especially considering that a good half of the items featured in my upcoming Holiday Challenge series are, by definition, baked goods. It raises the question: would anyone, by any chance, be more interested in learning how to perfectly steam spinach instead of indulging in another rich dessert recipe? Didn’t think so…

Another, perhaps more practical, reason for adopting this new vegetable-focused routine is its simplicity: it primarily involves only a microwave. And, crucially, I can’t burn myself using a microwave. Or at least, I fervently hope I can’t. Uh oh… I probably just jinxed myself. But seriously, the ease and safety of microwave cooking have become a welcome change after the hot and hazardous environment of the bakery kitchen.

I know that this post might feel like one of the most random and eclectic pieces I’ve ever published, seamlessly (or perhaps jarringly!) transitioning from blog aesthetics to burn care to bakery insights. However, I promise that I will soon be sharing a host of new and thoroughly tested recipes that are much more in line with what you’ve come to expect from this blog. And as you can probably already guess, given my current culinary environment and personal dietary shift, the next recipe I share will most certainly not be a baked good. At least, not for the immediate future, that is… Thank you for joining me on this journey of both aesthetic and practical changes, and for your continued support as the blog evolves!
