The Weekly Mix: Your Guide to Culinary Delights, Lifestyle Discoveries, and Wellness Journeys

The Weekly Mix - A Beautiful Plate

This week absolutely flew by, blurring into a whirlwind of activities and thoughts. It feels like just yesterday we were welcoming Monday, and now the weekend is already upon us! Whether it was the flurry of cake baking adventures or the usual daily commitments, time seemed to accelerate at an unbelievable pace. Nevertheless, I’m genuinely excited for the weekend, especially with the weather forecast predicting a delightful stretch of five consecutive days in the 60s here in Chicago. While the prospect of such mild temperatures in what should technically be late winter or early spring is undeniably appealing, a part of me can’t help but wonder about the broader environmental implications. It’s certainly not typical for this time of year, prompting a mix of celebration and concern.

Before diving into this week’s highlights, I want to extend a massive thank you for all the wonderful feedback on last week’s Weekly Mix. Your engagement means the world to me! And an extra special shout-out for the positive responses to this week’s post on how to effectively line a cake pan with parchment paper. It’s incredibly encouraging and has sparked a wave of excitement, inspiring me to brainstorm even more practical and clever kitchen tricks to share with you all in the coming weeks. Knowing that these tips resonate makes the effort truly rewarding.

Embracing Culinary Creativity: Baking, Decorating, and Delicious Recipes

Speaking of cake, I’ve had a delightful realization this week: cake decorating isn’t just a culinary art; it’s a surprisingly therapeutic activity. The process demands your full attention, forcing you to focus intently on the delicate task at hand and momentarily forget about any other worries or distractions. It’s a wonderful form of mindful engagement, allowing you to unwind and channel your energy into something beautiful and delicious.

One essential tool that has truly elevated my cake decorating experience is our revolving cake stand. It stands out as one of the most practical and cherished wedding presents we received. The secret to its superiority lies in its robust cast iron base, which provides unparalleled stability. This sturdy foundation allows for smooth, effortless rotation, making the frosting and detailing process significantly easier and more precise. If you’re serious about your baking, this is an investment worth considering.

Another rather surprising, yet incredibly useful, realization this week came in the realm of cake transportation. For anyone who has ever attempted to move a beautifully decorated cake from one location to another, you know the anxiety involved! I discovered that a simple cardboard file box works incredibly well for securely transporting cakes in a car. Its sturdy structure and high sides offer excellent protection against bumps and shifts, ensuring your masterpiece arrives intact. It’s an unconventional hack that has saved me much stress.

And on the topic of cakes, I absolutely must share a recent discovery: this chocolate coconut cake is hands down the prettiest I’ve seen in a long time. The intricate piping work on it is absolutely ridiculous – a true testament to skilled artistry and a source of immense inspiration for my own decorating endeavors.

Weekly Kitchen Favorites and New Discoveries

Beyond the world of cakes, my kitchen has been busy with some familiar favorites. I found myself making this classic chicken tortilla soup for what must be the millionth time this week. Its comforting flavors and ease of preparation make it a consistent go-to in our home. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend adding it to your repertoire – it’s pure warmth in a bowl.

On a more educational note, I delved into the truth about peanuts, which, I must admit, brought a bit of a sad face emoji to my morning. However, this insightful post from Sarah also included a truly delicious recipe for Balinese gado gado. I always learn so much from her incredibly well-researched and thoughtfully written posts, and this one was no exception. It’s a wonderful reminder that even when confronting uncomfortable truths, there’s always a culinary adventure waiting.

Streamlining Life: Productivity, Home, and Wellness

Moving beyond the kitchen, I had a chance to test out a fantastic productivity tool this week. Last week, Allison kindly recommended trying Sortd for email organization, and I’m thrilled to report that it’s absolutely amazing! If you, like me, are constantly battling an unruly inbox and seeking effective solutions to manage your digital communications, you absolutely must check it out. It transforms your email into a set of organized lists, making it much easier to prioritize and process tasks.

Unfortunately, not all discoveries this week were positive. One of my beloved Oxo sugar containers suffered an untimely demise, literally shattering. This unexpected event has sent me on the hunt for new storage solutions. Naturally, these elegant glass jars with acacia lids immediately caught my eye. They offer both aesthetic appeal and practical storage, making them a strong contender for replacing my broken set.

In the realm of entertainment, it’s only been five days since the Grammy Awards, and I’ve already listened to this ridiculously catchy song approximately 1,738 times. It’s one of those tracks that burrows into your brain and refuses to leave, providing the perfect soundtrack to daily tasks and moments of reflection. A true earworm, but in the best possible way!

Travel Plans, Dining Experiences, and Literary Journeys

Last weekend marked a significant milestone for our upcoming Japan trip: we officially booked all of our accommodations! Planning international travel always comes with its own unique set of challenges and triumphs. A crucial piece of advice I can offer, particularly if you ever plan to travel to Japan during the breathtaking cherry blossom season, is this: do not wait until just two months prior to book your lodging. We learned this the hard way, discovering that many desirable places were already completely booked out. Advance planning is absolutely key to securing your preferred stays during peak seasons.

Sunday brought a delightful brunch outing with my wonderful friend Kristin and her husband. I had one of the most interesting and memorable brunch dishes I’ve encountered in a while: homemade lamb sausage served in a rich tomato sauce with peppers, accompanied by cooling raita and a perfectly sous vide egg. It was an adventurous and incredibly satisfying combination of flavors and textures. Speaking of meals in Chicago, this experience further fueled my ongoing project: I’m currently putting together a comprehensive guide to my favorite restaurants in the city to share with you all. Stay tuned for some top-notch recommendations!

My literary pursuits are also taking an exciting turn. I recently ordered The Everlasting Meal and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. This book has been lingering on my must-read list for what feels like months, if not years, and I can’t wait to finally dive into its pages and absorb its wisdom about cooking and sustainability.

Back in the kitchen, I’m constantly looking for ways to refresh our meal rotations. I absolutely adore enchiladas but frequently forget to include them in our weekly plans. To remedy this, these black bean and sweet potato enchiladas are proudly featured on next week’s meal plan. They promise a flavorful and satisfying vegetarian option that I know we’ll all enjoy.

Informing Choices and Embracing Holistic Living

For those who have ever pondered the meaning behind the various animal welfare labels at the grocery store, this detailed article from The New York Times is a must-read. It was incredibly eye-opening for me, providing a comprehensive breakdown of what each label signifies and empowering consumers to make more informed choices about their food sources.

In another exciting development, I received a copy of Laura’s upcoming cookbook in the mail this week, and I can unequivocally say that it is absolutely stunning. The photography and recipes are truly inspiring. I’ll be sharing a recipe from it on the blog in the next few weeks, but I’d love to hear from you: what are you in the mood for? A healthy plant-based breakfast, a hearty dinner, a comforting soup, a vibrant salad, or perhaps a decadent dessert? Let me know your preferences!

My journey towards a more natural and non-toxic lifestyle has taken a significant leap this week. After downloading the Think Dirty app and literally scanning every single product in my bathroom, I am now making a concerted effort to switch all of my cosmetics, skincare, and even household products to more natural or non-toxic options. You’d be genuinely surprised at what common items are considered toxic! My partner, Connor, is gamely coming along for the ride, even if it means adjusting his routine. This week, he had to switch from foaming shaving cream to a non-foaming variety, which led to a hilarious moment when he asked me how much to put on his face. If you have any fantastic non-toxic skincare products that you absolutely love, please share them with me – I’m always on the lookout for recommendations!

On a lighter note, I’m currently lusting after this particular headboard. The design is simple, elegant, and perfectly encapsulates the aesthetic I’m hoping to achieve in our bedroom. A sigh of longing, indeed!

A Major Wellness Journey: Embracing Whole30

And now, for one last thing – and it’s somewhat significant! A few months ago, I read It Starts with Food, the foundational book behind the Whole30 program, cover to cover. I cannot stress enough how highly I recommend reading the actual book, as opposed to simply looking up what you can and cannot eat without truly understanding the comprehensive explanation for why. The depth of knowledge and scientific backing presented in the book provides invaluable context.

As a born skeptic, I generally tend to cast aside these types of dietary programs as fleeting fads. However, a remarkable amount of the information and philosophy presented in It Starts with Food profoundly resonated with me. It was genuinely fascinating, challenging many of my preconceived notions about food and its impact on the body. Long story short: I’ve decided to embark on a Whole30 journey, officially starting on Monday, February 27th.

Why am I sharing this rather personal decision with all of you? Because sharing it publicly on the internet will undoubtedly hold me accountable. Yes, I’m undeniably sad to temporarily say goodbye to beloved staples like pasta and the milk in my morning coffee, among many other things, for the next 30-plus days. It’s a significant shift! However, I am also incredibly excited for the challenge ahead and genuinely curious to observe how my body responds to such a comprehensive dietary change. This program will also force me to be much more creative in the kitchen, experimenting with new ingredients and cooking methods, which is an aspect I’m particularly thrilled about!

Inevitably, over the next 30 days, I’ll be sharing some recipes that happen to align perfectly with the Whole30 program. I promise that these recipes will be delicious and satisfying, delivering on flavor and nutritional value. If you’d like me to share more about my day-to-day experience trying Whole30 – including all the dirty details, challenges, and triumphs along the way – please let me know in the comments below! I’m happy to offer a transparent look into this wellness journey.

And with that, I’m out for the week. Please dump all of your thoughts, feedback, and recommendations below. I truly value your insights and engagement. I hope each and every one of you has a wonderful and rejuvenating weekend!
